What is ditra membrane?

Let’s discuss the differences between DITRA XL and regular DITRA. But before that, let’s talk about the functions of DITRA in general. Both DITRA membranes offer four functions: uncoupling, waterproofing, vapor management, and load distribution support. Another advantage of these products is their low profile and thin design, making transitions to adjacent coverings smooth.

One great feature of DITRA is its minimal waste. You can save and use all the scraps and cutoffs, even in closets, as it functions the same whether in large rolls or small pieces.

DITRA XL

Now, let’s address the question of why we have DITRA XL in addition to regular DITRA. DITRA XL is suitable for joist bays spaced 24 inches apart, with a minimum layer of 3/4 inch OSB or plywood when using porcelain or ceramic tile.

On the other hand, regular DITRA is recommended for 16-inch or 19.2-inch on center joist spacing, with a minimum thickness of 5/8 inch or 3/4 inch, respectively, for ceramic and porcelain tile.

Features

  • Provides uncoupling, waterproofing, vapor management, and heavy load distribution for durable tile installations.
  • Quick and easy installation on various surfaces including concrete, plywood, OSB, existing vinyl floors, and more.
  • Convenient alternative to cement backer board or plywood as a tile underlayment.
  • DITRA is only 1/8″ (3.5 mm) thick, offering a thin assembly without compromising performance.
  • Features cutting grooves and air release vents for precise cuts and faster filling.
  • DITRA-XL is suitable for ceramic tile installations on plywood or OSB subfloors with joists spaced up to 24″ o.c.
  • DITRA-XL is 5/16″ (7 mm) thick, providing a smooth transition between 5/16″ (7 mm) thick tile and 3/4″ (19 mm) thick hardwood flooring.
  • Ideal for accommodating movement in installations with natural stone tile or large-format tile.

When it comes to natural stone, regardless of joist spacing, regular DITRA requires an additional layer of OSB or plywood. However, with DITRA XL, if you have 24-inch on center joist spacing and a minimum thickness of 3/4 inch plywood or OSB, it would be the best choice.

So, that’s the difference between the two products and when you would opt for DITRA XL over regular DITRA.
